Weekly Round Up - Monday June 12th

Hey Geek Pull Listeners & Readers!

Hope your weekend was great! We’re here today to recap this past week’s biggest stories in Geekdom and Pop Culture. Let's get to it!

  • If you listened to our Wonder Woman Movie Review, you know that Warner Brothers’s newest submission in the expanding DCEU was expected to dominate this weekend at the box office over Universal’s Mummy reboot. Although it fared better internationally than domestically, the Mummy, opened in the US to the tune of $32 million, while Wonder Woman pulled in and additional $57 million, marking one of the lowest drops ever for a superhero film, a mere 45% from its opening weekend on June 2. To put this in perspective, Wonder Woman is doing better its second weekend in theaters, than two of its DCEU’s predecessors (Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad). This moves Wonder Woman’s domestic gross past the $200 million mark and brings the worldwide gross beyond the $430 million mark. You can read more on the industry’s take on this success over at Forbes and Variety.

  • Marvel and ABC have been hard at work at promoting their parent company Disney properties during the NBA finals this week. Not only did we get to see Peter Parker Hang out at Tony Stark’s NBA watch Party, we got treated to the first teaser Trailer for Marvel Studios upcoming Black Panther. The footage gives us a look at a the world and politics of Wakanda, as well as shows stars as Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia) and Michael B. Jordan, in action...not to mention Chadwick Boseman, as the Black Panther. Directed by Creed’s Ryan Coogler, Black Panther is set to open February 16th, 2018.

  • Lastly, pop culture and Geekdom lost a legend over the weekend. We here at Geek Pull want to express our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Hollywood legend Adam West, who passed away this past week at age 88. West of course played the Caped Crusader on ABC in the 1960’s and helped cement Batman as a pop culture icon, expanding the Dark Knights influence beyond just the splash pages of comic books. It’s been reported that Mr. West passed peacefully surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. • A Year strong and growing, DC’s relaunched rebirth titles continue to pick up steam. Last week’s Batman #24 by Tom King and David Finch, saw the caped crusader get down on one knee and propose to Catwoman. A Bruce Wayne  / Selina Kyle marriage has been teased for for some time, and has even come about in a alternate reality or two. This most recent development comes in the aftermath of the Batman / Flash button crossover (which we discussed on Issue 12 of the podcast) and the result of more than a year’s worth of story telling with Batman & Catwoman.
  • The wait is over...for now. DC’s Dark Knight III: The Master Race concluded with issue 9 this past week. The highly anticipated and delayed book continued the story of a future Batman that was first envisioned by Frank Miller and published by DC in 1986. For the third installment, Miller was joined by writer Brian Azzarello, artist Andy Kubert, and long time collaborator Klaus Janson.  You can purchase Dark Knight III: The Master Race wherever comic books are sold or by stopping by Comixology.
  • And lastly, Marvel Comics announced that Brian Michael Bendis will be scripting a “Punisher End of Days” series in the near future. Bendis, one of the current creative architects of the modern Marvel Universe and comic writing master, will bring the Punisher to the forefront in the Marvel’s New Defenders comic, set to release this next week, in advance of the Netflix’s own Defenders series this Summer. Defenders #1 goes on sale, Wednesday June 14.

That’s all for now. Don’t forget to find us on FacebookInstagram, or Twitter! Also, feel free to drop us a comment below, let us know what you think of this week’s news items, or just let us know how we are doing,
